On March 23, 2006, Bubba came into my life. He was carried out of the isolation room of the animal control center and put down, where he stood motionless with his back legs perpendicular to his body. Throughout the journey home, I kept glancing at him in the back of my vehicle, thinking, "this was once a beautiful dog." He was describe by the shelter staff as "very old and very depressed." After shaving the mats from his face and looking into his infected eyes, it was obvious that Bubba was just a very sick dog.

His initial diagnosis was Staph infection, with additional infections in both eyes and both ears. He has been treated aggressively with every spectrum of anbiotic and IV vitamin therapies, has had bi-weekly lab tests, and x-rays of his chest and spine. With the source of the infection still unidentified, he had dental surgery to remove abscessed teeth from his mouth. Although the eye and ear infections have lessened, the severity and length of time of the infections have left Bubba blind and deaf. Additionally, his spinal x-rays disclosed that he has spondolyosis with 3 fused vertebrae, which should render him unable to walk.

Bubba, though, is no ordinary dog. Although his white blood count is still extremely elevated, he continues to receive daily oral antibiotics, ear washes and eye medication, and he walks very slowly and laboriously, Bubba never fails to lick your hand or roll over for a tummy rub at the end of the day. His bravery and gentleness reflect all that is good in the lhasa breed and have touched all of us who have come to know him. As Bubba continues his fight for life, we continue to fight for his life as well and try to find the source of the infection. Bubba is now scheduled for additional testing and a heart scan.
