On Feb 7th Mia Nicer, the adoption coordinator for Staten Island CACC, contacted Barb Peters, an ALAC rescue volunteer regarding Homer, a little seven year old lhasa boy. The shelter said Homer was blind and was in desperate need to get out since he had developed kennel cough. The big problem -- he was contagious and needed a place with no other dogs or one where he could be isolated.
The alert went out and Paddy Newell, a rescuer in Arlington VA answered. She found a foster home for Homer in Newtown Sq PA. The plan was for Homer to recover at the foster and then travel to VA to Paddy's rescue. Unfortunately Homer got much worse and was rushed to the Old Marple Veterinary Hospital. He spent several days in intensive care, where he was touch and go. They thought he had pneumonia and he would not eat. Finally the meds kicked in and he improved enough to be able to travel to VA to a new foster home.
Homer fully recovered and proved to be a delightful and loving companion who was adored by his foster family. And although he has long term eye neglect he is not blind!!!! He can see quite well and gets special eye drops daily. Best of all Homer now has a forever Dad, Chris, who fell in love with this very special little man.
Homer has a happy ending and a new life. His vet bills, however, are in excess of $1200 and Paddy Newell's rescue is small and already has several dogs with ongoing medical needs, Because Homer's need was so urgent, there was no time to try to get donations - a delay in treatement could have cost this boy his life - so Odean Cusack, whom some of you may know from her numerous posts on lhasas in need, called the veterinary hospital and offered her credit card so Homer could get whatever care he needed.
If you would like to help Odean and Paddy and be a friend of Homer, just click the secure PayPal buttons above to make a donation and ALAC rescue will make sure the donation goes to Homer's benefactors. Thank you and Homer thanks you. | close window
